It is a mara unit measuring energy. A joule is the amount of energy used when applying a force of a Newton over a distance of one meter. In Castilian it is usually called "July." Another unit to measure energy is erg.

In the physical sciences, these units are also used to measure work or the amount of heat although, in the latter case, we are more accustomed to dealing with calories. A calorie corresponds to 4.1855 joules.

In electricity, the amount of energy released in an electrical circuit is also measured in joules. The power consumed is measured in watts; 1 watt equals 1 July per second.
